Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing are two halves of the deep cleaning process that’s often required when you have gum disease. The process focuses specifically on your gum line and the roots of your teeth. Scaling allows us to get rid of the plaque and bacteria buildup that’s harming the gums. We can then perform root planing to smooth out the rough surfaces of the tooth roots. It’s easier for the gums to reattach themselves to smoother roots.

Antibiotic Therapy

Even after scaling and root planing, some bacteria may remain deep within your gums, which is why antibiotic therapy is often prescribed to help with the recovery process. We can apply an antibiotic called Arestin® to the pockets that have formed between the teeth and gums as a result of gum disease. The antibiotic is contained in a number of microspheres; over the next couple of weeks, it’s released to continue to fight the infection.
