With your dental crown finally placed, you may think your tooth’s troubles are over. You can now rely on your new cap to protect your pearly white! However, you actually need to recover from your dental crown treatment first; you aren’t “out of the woods” just yet. That’s why your San Antonio dentist is here to offer some helpful guidance. So, here’s what you’ll feel after dental crown treatment and how to manage those feelings.

What You’ll Feel After Getting a Dental Crown

Once your dental crown is placed, you’ll likely experience three short-lived side effects. These include the following:

Slight Mouth Numbness

You’ll likely have been under anesthesia for treatment, so your mouth will feel numb afterward. That means you must be careful of what you eat and drink; you’ll injure your mouth otherwise. After all, you don’t want to burn your tongue or gums with very hot foods or drinks. An incident like that would aggravate previous bruises or inflammation at the anesthetic injection site.

Some Oral Discomfort

Your treated tooth will probably ache a bit once the anesthetic fades. Still, rest assured that this reaction is normal and temporary; it stems from your pearly white losing enamel. Any pain you feel should fade after a few days, ensuring you’re ready to enjoy your stronger smile.

Temperature Sensitivity

When the numbness wears off, your crowned tooth may be sensitive to extreme temperatures. The treatment site can sometimes react intensely to very hot and cold surroundings. Even worse, the site could be vulnerable to pressure if you bite down too hard.

Your dental crown may fit poorly if the sensitivity persists for a long time. In that case, please talk to your dental provider.

How Should You Manage Those Feelings?

If you want to manage post-treatment sensations effectively, make sure to use the following tips:

  • Avoid Hot Meals – Don’t have hot liquids or foods until your mouth’s numbness fades. That way, you can avoid self-inflicted burns.
  • Use Pain Medication – If your post-treatment aches are intense, try using pain relievers like Advil or Tylenol.
  • Do Saltwater Rinses – You can often soothe your mouth’s irritated tissues by rinsing with warm saltwater.
  • Practice Good Oral Care – Brush your crowned teeth twice daily and floss between them once daily. Such pearly whites can still decay, so good hygiene protects them.

By noting the points above, you’ll recover from your dental crown treatment just fine. That said, please talk to your dentist if you need extra help.
