Do you have flaws in your teeth that make you feel too self-conscious to smile authentically? It’s natural to worry that you might be judged for imperfections in your teeth, such as chips, cracks, or stubborn stains.

Thankfully, your dentist offers a variety of cosmetic services intended to enhance your appearance, such as porcelain veneers, dental bonding, and teeth whitening. Today, these services are known for being minimally invasive and don’t usually cause discomfort, but that hasn’t always been the case. Continue reading to learn more about how far cosmetic dentistry has come since its earliest inception!

When Did Cosmetic Dentistry Begin?

Many people think that cosmetic dentistry is a contemporary concept, but the truth is that humans have been seeking ways to enhance their smiles since ancient times. For instance, as far back as 700 B.C., the Etruscans made rudimentary dentures with ivory, bone, or teeth taken from other people or animals.

It has also been discovered that ancient Egyptians used precious materials, like gemstones or seashells, to try to replace missing teeth. They also developed an oral paste from pumice stone and vinegar that they used to scrub their enamel. The Romans also understood the value of a beautiful grin and were known to use a concoction containing urine, high in ammonia, to help brighten their teeth.

How Did Dental Techniques Evolve?

During the Middle Ages, dental care often was left to barbers, who were already working in the vicinity of the face and mouth to approve their clients’ appearances. However, they often filed teeth to shape them or used acid to brighten them, which contributed to worsening levels of cavities, gum disease, and other oral issues.

Then, in the 1700s, scientists began experimenting with new methods and technologies that led to updated materials, such as porcelain dentures, which could be customized to look more lifelike. Then, in the 20th century, acrylic resin and other plastics were developed, which led to more accurate and comfortable treatments. For instance, in the 1930s, temporary veneers were invented to help improve a movie star’s smile for the big screen.

Are Contemporary Cosmetic Dental Procedures Safe?

Thanks to ongoing advancements in dental technology and techniques, today, aesthetic procedures are safe for most people as long as they’re administered by a qualified provider. Most are also considered minimally invasive, because there’s no need for numbing or needles. However, it’s possible to develop mild sensitivity after certain treatments, such as removing enamel in preparation for veneers or following a teeth whitening procedure.

Fortunately, associated discomfort is usually mild and can often be safely mitigated with the recommended dosage of over-the-counter medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

If you’re unsure which procedures can help you meet your individual smile goals, consulting your dentist can provide the answers you seek!
